Orion RED is a custom manufacturer of millwork, store fixtures, & food service for more than 35 years. Orion provides full-service capabilities including, wood, stone, lighting, & metal in our 220,000 square foot facility.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Commercial Millwork Estimator to join our growing team. In this role, you will be responsible for evaluating architectural drawings and specifications to generate accurate, competitive, and profitable bids for custom architectural millwork, casework, and specialty interior finishes.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in finish carpentry or custom woodworking fabrication, paired with sharp digital takeoff skills and a deep understanding of commercial construction bidding.
Core Responsibilities:
- Analyze Plans & Specs: Thoroughly review architectural drawings, finish schedules, and project specifications (Division 6 and 12) to identify project scope.
- Perform Takeoffs: Conduct precise digital quantity takeoffs for custom cabinetry, paneling, countertops, trim, and hardware.
- Calculate Full Costs: Estimate materials, shop labor hours, finishing, engineering/drafting time, delivery, and field installation costs.
- Source & Negotiate: Solicit and analyze vendor quotes for raw materials, specialty hardware, and subcontractor services to ensure competitive pricing.
- Value Engineering: Identify opportunities for cost savings by recommending alternative fabrication methods or materials without sacrificing design intent.
- Submit Winning Bids: Prepare clear, comprehensive proposals outlining scope inclusions, exclusions, clarifications, and alternates for General Contractors.
- Project Handoff: Successfully transition awarded projects to the drafting and project management teams, detailing budget allocations and scope nuances.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of dedicated estimating experience in commercial millwork, custom cabinetry, or architectural casework.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with digital takeoff and estimating software (Bluebeam or similar) and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Experience with AutoCAD is a plus.
- Industry Knowledge: Strong familiarity with AWI (Architectural Woodwork Institute) quality standards and construction documentation.
- Blueprint Literacy: Ability to fluidly read and interpret complex architectural sections, elevations, and structural integrations.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills to build rapport with GCs, vendors, and internal fabrication teams.
